Students may not have to make up missed weather days

E-mail Print PDF

Feb. 10, 2011 - In a highly-unlikely-for-Texas turn of events, Leonard ISD students missed four days last week due to icy road conditions and snowy weather. Precipitation fell early Tuesday and closed school for the first day, and the next day - on Groundhog's Day - residents awoke to find the same thing, and again on Thursday. One resident eluded to the fact that it felt like they were living the movie "Groundhog's Day" during those four days. More snow fell Friday - a lot more snow in fact - for Texas at least - and kept the school doors closed. With temperatures not breaking the freezing point for that handful of days, it created hazardous road conditions for an extended period of time in the area, leaving schools with no other option but to close.

Homes of History: Davy house now occupied by Harvey

E-mail Print PDF

Feb. 10, 2011 - According to volume two of The History of Leonard, in 1929, the Davys- A. S. "Add" and Mamie - built what was then the third brick house in Leonard. It was also one of the first to have indoor plumbing. "Add", however, would not abandon the old-style wooden outdoor toilet, and had one placed near the back alley. While the rest of the family enjoyed the indoor toilet, Mr. Davy continued to use the "out-back facility" for several more years. He is quoted as saying, "You never know when the new sewer system contraption may break down." In the year 2004 (the current year of publication for The History of Leonard - Volume II), the red brick house was still occupied. It is located on the northwest corner of the intersection of Collins and Parmele. Lois Harvey and family have occupied the home since January of 1985.

Feb. 3, 2011 - For the second time in a month, Leonard schools closed due to inclement weather that hit the northeast Texas region. The weather was part of a line of winter weather that stretched from Texas to the northeast. The National Weather Service showed an over 2100-mile line that would potentially drop at least one inch of snow, but as much as one- to two-feet, in the states affected by the storm.

In Leonard, sleet fell early Tuesday morning - as the first day of February dawned and succeeded in maintaining its reputation for being the coldest month in North Texas. Calls went out from Leonard ISD around 6 a.m. that school was closed for the day as the roads were slippery and impassable for the buses. The slick roads were desolate, as many stayed home from work in the warmth of their homes. A second call went out Tuesday afternoon that school would remain closed on Wednesday.

Homes of History: Ewing home still stands

E-mail Print PDF

Feb. 3, 2011 - In 1925, Delta and Lena Ewing built a home on Connett Street. The home was one-story with three bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, living room, bathroom, a screened-in porch on the southeast (front) corner of the house and a carport made just wide enough for a Model T or A. The house was brick and the posts around the carport and front porch bore the same material halfway up where wooden posts showed to the roof line.

Donations go into this fund and are disbursed to the family as needed, and are not considered taxable income for the family. A local account was set up at American Bank of Texas for the convenience of local persons or organizations wishing to donate to the COTA fund in honor of Madeline Burke.
