30 YEARS AGO - APRIL 24, 1981

Bike-A-Thon

Beverly Stankiewicz, chairman, of the Wheels For Life Bike-a-thon reported contributions of $675 for the St. Judes Research Hospital.

Prizes, drinks and cups were donated by Eckerd Drugs, First National Bank of Celeste, Woody’s 844, Burger King, Long John Silver’s and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 4011, which made this event more enjoyable for the riders.

A special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Redfearn, Mr. and Mrs. Dougherty and Mrs. Reba Barnard who were helpers in this event.

School Tennis Results

Ruth Hall and Konnie Griffis repeated as champion in District by downing S&S 6-0, 6-0; Blue Ridge #2, 6-1, 6-0; and Blue Ridge #1 6-0, 6-0.

Cindy Speir won the District by defeating Prosper 6-0, 6-0; Blue Ridge #2, 6-2, 6-0; and Blue Ridge #1, 6-0, 6-1.

Troy Shelton won District by defeating Blue Ridge 6-0, 6-0 and Steve Sumrow 7-4, 6-1.

Steve Sumrow won second by defeating Prosper 6-0, 6-0 and lost to Troy.

Stella Cummings lost in girls singles 6-3, 6-3 to Blue Ridge #1.

Cheryl Waters and Sharon Craver won over S&S 6-0, 6-1, lost to Blue Ridge #1 7-5, 6-4 and then won third place over Blue Ridge #2, 6-2, 6-1.

David Swindell and Richard Dees lost to Prosper #1 7-5, 6-4, and then beat Blue Ridge #1 6-4, 6-2 for third place.

Gary Lyon Receives Honor

Gary L. Lyon was presented the Glen Gatlin Award in Finance at East Texas State University’s Honors Day program April 17, Dr. Kenton E. Ross, dean of the College of Business Administration, presented the award to the finance major. Lyon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Lyon, Celeste. He is a 1977 graduate of Celeste High School.

 

50 YEARS AGO - APRIL 28, 1961

Miss Carol Walker And I. H. McGee Married Friday

Miss Carol Ann Walker and I. H. McGee Jr., repeated nuptial vows at a ring ceremony Friday evening at 8 o’clock in the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Taylor, 2511 Hillcrest, in Greenville. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. I. H. McGee Sr., Route 1, Leonard.

The Rev. Joe Campbell, pastor of Bethel Baptist church, was the officiant.

Attending the couple were Mr. and Mrs. J. H. McGee of Garland.

The bride chose for her wedding a beige linen frock with beige accessories. Her flowers were white and bronze mums.

Decorations for the wedding and reception which followed, were carried out in bouquets of white and bronze chrysanthemums.

The former Miss Walker is a graduate of the 1958 class of Greenville High School. Mr. McGee was educated in the Celeste Schools and is now employed at Temco.

The couple will live in the old Puckett home in the north part of Celeste.

Pre-School Age Will Visit School Tuesday, May 2nd

G. W. Tillerson, superintendent of Celeste Schools announces Tuesday, May 2, is visitation day for children who will start to school at the beginning of the 1961-62 term.

Children may ride the school buses on this day or may be brought by parents. The will come to school at 8:30 a.m. and remain until school is out.

The children will be guests in the lunch room at the noon hour.
