Feb. 3, 2011 - The Leonard Picnic planning committee met last Wednesday to get a head-start on organizing the annual town celebration, and in remembrance of the 10-year anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, a theme of "Honoring our American Heroes" was decided on.

Committee members talked about the various events that are always included, as well as one event that has taken a more than decade-long hiatus, but is on the calendar of events again this year - the Miss Leonard Pageant. The pageant will be open to girls who are residents of Leonard or are enrolled at Leonard ISD, and will have categories for infants up to 18 years of age. More information will be released at a later date, as well as registration and deadline information. There will be a costume category at every age level based on the theme of the picnic - American heroes: soldiers, firefighters, police officers, etc. - so those considering entering a child may want to start getting ideas together for this division.

There is ample opportunity for the community to get involved in many aspects of the picnic. Volunteers will be needed for several - if not all - events.
