Tigers Defeat Class A Whitesboro

The Leonard Tigers stepped out of their class Wednesday to slap a 6-2 defeat on the Class A Whitesboro Bearcats. Whitesboro is champion of district 14-A.

Wednesday's game was a practice game for both teams as they are both waiting for play-off games. The game was called after 5 innings of play had been completed and Leonard was battling in the top of the sixth, because of rain.

David Campbell scattered seven hits for Leonard. Heads-up play by catcher Billy Steele stamped out a Whitesboro rally in the second inning when he pulled off an unassisted double play.

The Tigers fell behind 1-0 when Whitesboro scored a single run in the second. Leonard came back to tie it up in the third when Bernard Wallace walked, stole second and scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers went ahead to stay with two runs in the fourth and added three more in the fifth. David Campbell led Leonard hitters with a single and triple for three times at and drove in two runs.

Jerry Blacketer and Jimmie McBroom collected the only other hits for Leonard.

The win ran Leonard's season record to 10 wins against 5 losses.

Hale Re-Elected President Leonard Athletic Club

Clyde Hale was re-elected president of Leonard Athletic Club at a regular meeting of the organization last Thursday night in the school cafeteria.

T. E. Blacketer was elected vice president, and Ben Treadway was elected secretary-treasurer.

The next meeting for the club will be a breakfast at Robbin Cafeteria at 6 A.M. Thursday, May 11.

Everyone interested in the athletic program is invited and urged to attend this meeting.

Safe-Crackers Take Over $300 From Leonard High School Friday Night

Safe-cracking burglars took between $300 and $400 in cash from the safe in Superintendent C. K. McClendon's office in Leonard high school between 11:45 p.m. last Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday.

The burglars battered the hinges off the door and peeled the safe to get in. They took between $80 and $100 in silver and almost $400 in bills. They left checks behind.

The burglars entered via a fire escape and through a window. The glass was broken in the door to the superintendents office and the door unlocked.

The Leonard seniors had presented a play Friday night and money taken included the receipts from the play. School officials were at the building until 11:45 p.m., after which time they locked the building before going home.

Sheriff Hoyt Ivey was assisted in the investigation of the break-in by Texas Ranger Frank Kemp, Deputies Troy McNear and Harvey Trapp and Constable Wade Morris.
