Jan. 27, 2011 - The boy's and girl's powerlifting teams from Leonard High School competed in the 2011 Van Alstyne Powerlifting Meet on Saturday, Jan. 22, and several brought home individual medals, and the girls team added another first-place trophy to their growing collection.

altAllye Schiegg, Latiesha Buckley and April Jones once again lead the girl's team, dominating their weight classes and bringing home first place medals. All three placed first in the previous week's meet at Anna. Schiegg competed in the 105 weight class and lifted a total of 365 pounds, Buckley lifted in the 220 weight class and lifted a total of 750 pounds and Jones lifted a total of 865 pounds in the 181 weight class and recived the Best Lifter Award on the platform.

Others receiving medals were Michelle Daniels who placed second in the 132 weight class, Taylor Brown who placed second in the 165 weight class, Tara Howard who placed second in the 220+ weight class and Brittany McCrohan who placed second in the 97 weight class.

Kami Parker and Jordan Benton also competed in the meet and rounded out the scoring with fourth place finishes in their respective weight classes of 97 and 114.

Leonard earned a combined team total of 45 points, beating second-place Anna by seven points. They were the top team out of 12 attending the meet. Each first place finish is worth seven points, each second place finish is worth five points and each fourth place finish is worth two points.

In the boy's division, the first place trophies were just out of reach for a couple of Leonard competitors. Leading the team was Solomon Titus in the 132 weight class who lifted a total of 790 pounds and earned a second place finish.

Teammates Bubba Weaver and Gio Soto lifted in the same weight class and earned fifth place and seventh place respectively. Gavin Buckaloo added points for Leonard with a third place finish in the 275 division. He lifted a combined total of 1,145 pounds. Jarrell Washington was also on the point board with 910 total pounds lifted in the 148 weight class - good enough for a fourth place finish.

Other boys lifting for Leonard were Cameron Adkins in the super heavy weight class who lifted 900 pounds and placed fifth. Dakota Smith lifted in the 220 weight class and placed eighth with 780 pounds. Curtis Sims, Arnold Contreras and Jordan Buckaloo all competed in the 181 weight class and finished 9, 11 and 13 respectively.

Overall, the boys finished seventh out of 15 teams, improving slightly over the previous week's meet at Anna where they finished ninth out of 16 teams (see related photo and story on Page 6).
