Fannin County Farm Bureau sees member growth in 2010

Although 2010 was a difficult year for many Texas organizations, Fannin County Farm Bureau once again enjoyed membership growth, increasing by 226 member families this year.

Jerry Magness, Fannin County Farm Bureau president explained why the organization continues to grow year after year.

Republican women plan exciting new year

Jan. 27, 2011 - 2011 looks to be an exciting year for the Fannin County Republican Women. On Saturday, members of the executive board met for a day long planning session. In a change from the previous year, the FCRW will meet once a month on Monday's in the Elizabeth May Room at the American Bank of Texas. With monthly meetings comes the opportunity for education and continuity of sharing of information. It was determined the organization has need for several new committees which will give all the members an opportunity to share their special skills. The board discussed and concentrated on topics for the monthly meetings which were felt to have the most impact and influence on the lives of their members. There will be a variety of speakers within and from outside the area who can speak on specific subjects unique to Fannin County.

Coin association tour coming to McKinney

Jan. 27, 2011 - McKinney is the next stop for the International Coin Collectors Association's world tour. During this event at the Best Western Feb. 1-5, collectors are hoping to see items such as coins and paper currency issued prior to 1965, gold items including class rings, mismatched earrings, broken necklaces, gold coins and bullion. These items are highly sought after by collectors from around the world!

 

DAR chapter elects officers

Jan. 27, 2011 - Officers for the 2011-12 year were elected at the regular meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution George Blakey chapter held Jan. 8. Twelve members were present to elect the following: Regent, Betsy Sterkel; Vice Regent, Sheri Thedford; Chaplain, Nancy Bellows; Treasurer, Alice Creecy; Secretary, Debbie Westbrook; Historian, Mary Beavers; and Registrar, Shirley Harman.

 

Capitol Watch 418: Pre-filed Bills

Jan. 27. 2011 - The 82nd legislative session began Tuesday, Jan. 11. Legislators will debate the House Rules this upcoming week and are waiting to receive their committee assignments. This week, I will continue to talk about a few of the bills that have been filed by other legislators from around the state for the upcoming legislative session.

HB 199 would move the sales tax holiday for clothing, footwear, and other back-to-school items from the third weekend in August to the first weekend in August. The limits on what items are eligible for the tax exemption remain; the sales price of the article must be less than $100 and the sale begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and ends at midnight on the following Sunday.
