April 7, 2011 - Fannin County Judge Spanky Carter has officially declared April to be Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. Fannin County is joining with the State of Texas and the United States in observing this month.

The Fannin County Children's Center and the Child Welfare Board of Fannin County are organizing several events and activities for this occasion. "No Excuse for Child Abuse" is the slogan of the month. Local businesses, schools and churches with outdoor marquee signs are encouraged to post this slogan on their signs during the month of April.

April 13 is "Go Blue Day" in Texas, a day that is promoted by the Fannin County Child Welfare Board and the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards. Everyone is encouraged to wear blue in honor and remembrance of victims of child abuse.

"Stand Up For Kids" event is the "Go Blue Day" event for Fannin County. The community is invited to come and go from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at Family Video at 1400 N. Center Street in Bonham. There will be a bounce house, obstacle course, pony rides, games, fire trucks and more at the event. When kids and families arrive, they will be given a list of all of the free activities. As they complete each activity, they will get their list marked. A completely filled up list can be traded in for a goodie bag, filled with several great items from local businesses and others. Each goodie bag will include a coupon for a free Icee from Kwik Chek, free movie rental from Family Video, a toy from Sonic, child abuse prevention materials and a blue bracelet and a pencil which have the slogan "No Excuse for Child Abuse."

On April 21, the Children's Center will host their annual open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 112 West Fifth Street in Bonham. Winners of the center's children's art contest will be recognized and all entries will be on display. Tours, refreshments and networking opportunities will also be included in the event.

Blue Sunday is May 1 this year. Usually the last Sunday in April, this event was moved up one week this year due to Easter. On this day, churches are encouraged to say prayers for children who are abused and for the professionals and volunteers who are working to end child abuse. For more information, go to www.bluesunday.org.

The Children's Center will also be hosting training classes in April and May for adults to learn how to prevent, recognize and respond to child sexual abuse. For more information, go to www.fanninccc.org or call (903) 583-4339.
