30 YEARS AGO - MARCH 27, 1981
Tammy Whitworth Wins Blue Ribbon
Tammy Whitworth won a blue ribbon and third place rosette ribbon in the Senior Bread Food Group at the District 4 4-H Food Show held Saturday, March 14 in Denton in the Golden Triangle Mall. Tammy was judged on her entry of Earth Bread, knowledge ofnutrition, and the total exhibit.
Tammy, member of the Kingston 4-H Club, has been a 4-H member for five years. Mrs. Bell Lamm serves as her organizational leader, and Mrs. Patsy Whitworth is her subject matter leader.
Tammy was accompanied to the District Show by Mrs. Patsy Whitworthand Mrs. Bell Lamm, Mrs. Dorothy Hopkins, Celeste homemaking teacher, served as a judge in the Senior Snack and Beverage Division during the Food Show.
Lady Devils Take 2nd Place
The Celeste Lady Devils against stiff winds and a 9-team field amassed 112 points for an impressive second place finish at the First Annual Trojan Relays Saturday at Paris.
Paced by Cindy Speir's first place showings in the long and triple jump, 3,200 meter run and 800 meter dash.
FIELD EVENTS - Shot 2nd Cummings 31'7 1/2", 6th Craver; High Jump - 2nd Waters 4'6" 3rd Lane 4'4"; Triple Jump - 1st Speir 32'10 1/2"; Long Jump - 1st Speir 16'13 3/4".
RUNNING EVENTS - 400 meter dash - Spoonemore 3rd 69.23; 800 meter relay 4th LaFavers, Babers, Alford, Waters 2:08.18; 800 meter dash - Speir 1st 2:30.50; 100 meter hurdles - Waters 3rd 17.7; 400 meter relay 4th - LaFavers, Alford, Wilcox, Spoonemore 59.43; 3,200 meter run 1st Speir 13:11.54; 200 meter dash - Waters 5th 35.35; 1000 meter run - Babers 3rd 6:41.31; 1600 meter relay - Lane, Craver, Lanier, Spoonemore 4th 5:19.00.
First Six team points: Como Pickton 147, Celeste 112, Greenville 93, Cumby 65, Blue Ridge 65, Fannindel 35.
Youth Sports Association Bingo Game
The Youth Sports Association is sponsoring a bingo game Thursday, March 26, at the V. F. W. in Farmersville on Highway 380.
Hot dogs, corny dogs, and nachos will be sold starting at 6:00 p.m. Bingo to start at 7:00 p.m. All proceeds will go to support the up keep of the Celeste baseball field for Little League play.
Field Clean-Up
The youth sports association will hold a work day at the baseball field, March 28 at 9 a.m. Everyone is invited to come and spruce up the field. Anyone with special equipment (lumber, tools) please contact Mike Lewis 568-4393 prior to Saturday. All donations will be appreciated.
Baseball Tourney
A Men's Baseball tournament will be held April 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at the Celeste Baseball Field.
We need townspeople to support these games and to patronize the concession stand. All proceeds will go to support the Celeste Baseball Youth Association.
50 YEARS AGO - MARCH 24, 1961
Coach Fuller Has Resigned As Head Mentor At Celeste
Coach S. L. Fuller has resigned as football coach and Elementary Principal of the Celeste School effective at the end of this semester.
Coach Fuller is serving his second year as head mentor and was recently re-elected by action of the Celeste Independent School Trustees.
Coach Fuller has not disclosed his intentions for next year.
Mrs. Jerry Swindell Shower Honoree
A miscellaneous shower in the Celeste high school library from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 18, honored Mrs. Jerry Swindell, the former Miss Sarah Roach.
Hostesses were Mmes. Jestina Hunter, Jane Hunter, Allene Gibson, Martha Jo Hackney, Cindy McGuire, Frances Arey, Kay Nichols, Ida Arey, Anglou Slayden, Imogene Ross, Ruby Warren, Cleatis Hudson, Merle Pearce and Nadene Duncan.
The refreshment table was decorated with Spring flowers and a large Easter Bunny.
The honoree was presented an array of lovely gifts.
Out of town guests included Mrs. Ora Bell Aston, Mrs. Rayford Nichols, Mrs. B. M. McCraw, Mrs. Garland Roach and Miss Wilma McCraw of Greenville, Mrs. C. W. Powell of Dallas, Mrs. John Coomer of Wylie, Mrs. Lois Wright, Mrs. Estelle Rogers and Mrs. A. B. Lacy of Leonard.
New baby
Mr. and Mrs. James David Lacy are the proud parents of a new baby, their first. The young man arrived last Saturday p.m. in a Dallas hospital, weighing slightly over six pounds. His name is Charles Allen.
"Miss Frankie" who is grandmother for the first time, can now always "just happen to have a picture in my purse" like all grandmothers do, when babies are mentioned.
