March 31, 2011 - The Leonard Chamber of Commerce's big event of the year - the Annual Banquet and Awards Night - is scheduled for this Monday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in the Leonard High School auditorium. Community members are invited and encouraged to be a part of the evening's festivities, which will include lots of fun events, a wonderful meal and the awarding of the Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Educator of the Year.
The Citizen of the Year will join the ranks of Dr. J.W. Davis & Dr. R.D. Van Schoick, Tom Hymer, L.R. Fullerton, W.C. Griffitt, Arvis Buchanan, Eugene Kegans, Larry Tucker, Billy Dan Watson, Eddie Sudderth, Dorothy Fullerton, Garvis Buchanan, Becky Kegans, Jeannie Johnson, Billy Harold Martin, Pam Eaton, Charles Wrenn, David Johnson, Jodie Broyles, Jane Blackerby, Allecia Booher, Leonard Volunteer Fire Department, Jim Arnold, Mary Ann Marshall, Butch Henderson, Stan Barker, Texas-New Mexico Power Company, Bill & Mary Gentry, Amy Boggs, Chuck Vibbert, Steve Coker, Jackie Bonds, BillWatson, Rose Farhood, Angela Sadler and Penny Edwards, who were given the award for 1975-2009. Larry LaFavers and Brad Maxwell were named Educator of the year for 2008 and 2009. From 2003 to 2009, the Business of the Year was American Bank of Texas, Leonard Pharmacy, KD Johnson Inc., Sudderth Real Estate & Construction, B&B Food Store, First National Bank of Trenton, Lea's Restaurant and Dairy Queen.
Tickets are available for sale at this time at KD Johnson and The Leonard Pharmacy downtown. They are $15 each and will include a meal catered by Luna Azul and entertainment provided by the Leonard High School Jazz Band. Table sales are no longer available.
The theme for the night is "Shop Local, Shop Leonard" and Chamber President Scott Blackerby will put on a skit that shows how shopping locally helps everybody.
Door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening from many area businesses.
One event held in conjunction with the banquet to benefit the fireworks at this year's Leonard Picnic is a ring raffle, with tickets for sale now. The ring (pictured) was donated by Jack Bonds and Pawn Tech. The tickets are 1 for $5 or 10 for $20 and are for sale at The Leonard Pharmacy downtown. Tickets will also be for sale on the night of the event. The drawing for the ring will take place at the banquet after the door prize presentations.
David "Scoop" Johnson will emcee the banquet.
