March 17, 2011 - Funeral services for Charles Elgin Atnip, 83-year-old Leonard resident, were held Tuesday, March 15, at 10 a.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel in Leonard with Charles Wrenn officiating. Burial followed in Leonard Cemetery. He passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011 at the Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham.
Atnip was born March 23, 1927, at Siluria, Ala., the son of Lennie Edward and Virginia Eloise Reid Atnip. He married Vera Dell Liner Brister on Sept. 16, 1976 in Leonard. He was retired from Southwest Pump in Bonham, a member of the Methodist church and enjoyed square dancing.
Atnip is survived by sons, Eddie Brister of Commerce, Charles Elgin Atnip, Jr. of Reno, Nev., and John Wayne Atnip of Oregon; daughter, Nancy Zachary of Celeste; sisters, Edna Collins and Lyda Nichols of Bonham and Betty McSpedden of Carrollton; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and a step-daughter.
Family visitation was held Monday, March 14, from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
