Devilettes Take District 9-A Title

In the beginning of the 1980 - 81 basketball season the devilettes of Celeste High School faced some changes made by the University Interscholastic League in Austin. Playing in District 34A the Celeste ladies had only one familiar opponent - Bland Tigers; other Tigers came from Trenton and Blue Ridge. Savoy Cardinals and Ector Eagles completed the new slate of competition. Savoy Cardinals habitually made the Regional Tournament at Kilgore; Blue Ridge had many District Championships on record. A real challenge was ahead for Coach G. W. Tillerson, assistant Kay Cawthon, and the twenty-one young ladies to make another great basketball season. A real determination to meet this test resulted in long hours of hard work.

Friday night - the last of regular season play - still held a challenge. The Savoy ladies, playing elsewhere, had two conference loses; Blue Ridge had two; Celeste Devilettes held an edge of only one loss. A loss by Celeste would give a three-way tie.

Blue Ridge and Celeste gems took the court with visions of victory. At the close of the first quarters, Blue Ridge held a lead - 8 to 7; second quarter play resulted in a half-time score, 23 to 14, with Devilettes leading- a trend which continued to a final victoryof 50 to 29 and a District Championship once more for Celeste.

Cindy Speir led the offense with 37 points; team members Tammy Spoonemore, Ruth Hall, and Nan Chambliss set up many successful plays for the offense. Martha Taylor, Cheryl Waters and Christy Prather were outstanding on defense. High scoring for Blue Ridge was shared by Burchett with 9 and Toepperwien with 8.

Members of the 1980-81 Devilettes are: Seniors Cindy Speir, Ruth Hall, Nan Chambliss, Karen Cummings; Juniors Tammy Spoonemore, Martha Taylor, Christy Prather, Tamara Dearing; Sophomores Barby Spoonemoore, Debbie Wilcox, Renea Alford, Sheryl Tittle, Shivon Lane; Freshmen Cheryl Waters, Sharon Craver, Kristi Baber, Collette Lanier, Stella Cummings, Charlene Spoonemore, Kim LaFavers, Lauie West.

This District Championship game was witnessed by the largest crowd of the season. Many "Gems" and "Jewels" - our Celeste Senior Citizens - were guests of honor on this occasion; many of these guests had grand children playing on the Celeste teams. A drawing for door-prize gave a Valentine box of candy to Jesse Rainwater.
