Notice of Election
The city council of the City of Celeste has called an election to be held April 4 at city hall to elect a Mayor and two Aldermen. Anyone wishing to file for mayor or alderman must file with the City Secretary by March 4, 1981.
Devilette's Tie
The Celeste girls journeyed to Savoy Tuesday nite needing only a win to be out of range in District. Instead they sputtered and missed their chance by losing to Savoy 36 to 34. It was the girls second loss of the year and their first loss in district. They are now tied with Savoy for 1st place with 2 games to go. Blue Ridge has a lot to say meeting Savoy Tuesday night and Celeste Friday night.
Celeste five started strong and built a 20-13 halftime lead. Celeste could only get 1 field goal in the 3rd quarter and that was at the beginning. Savoy came from a 28 to 15 down to a 33-28 lead with 2 minutes to go. Celeste rallied and had 2 chances in the last 30 seconds to tie the score but lost 36-34.
Celeste went to Bland Friday night and after building a 45 to 23 halftime lead, Coach Tillerson emptied the bench and Celeste came out ahead 67 to 59. Cindy Speir racked up 37 points and Tammy Spoonemore had 8.
Celeste journeys to Ector Tuesday night and plays Blue Ridge at Celeste Friday night to end the Conference. Come out Friday and help the Celeste teams to win. Senior Citizens invited to come out and see this one free.
5th and 6th Grade Girls Astros Basketball
The 5th and 6th grade girls basketball team, the Astro's, played their first game on January 24. The girls beat Simpson, 23 to 5. Karen Babers, Tammy Ballard, Jennifer Dees, Shannon Lanier, and Carol Sisk provided the scoring. Other team players assisting were Christy Speir, Sherry Lyday, Paula Daugherty, Amy Lamm, Teresa Lewis, and Kristi Spoonemore. Coach Lloyd Lanier is very impressed with his team of girls. He is proud of the team spirit and sportsmanship they show.
The Astro's defeated Brock, January 31, in the Quinlan league 26-0. A good defensive game was played by all the team players. Scoring by Karen Babers, Tammy Ballard, Shannon Lanier, Teresa Lewis, and Carol Sisk put the points on the scoreboard. Sherry Lyday, Christy Speir and Kristi Spoonemore added the winning touch to the team.
The Astro's pulled out a close ballgame with Boyett on February 7. At the end of four quarters the score was tied 19-19. A rally in the two minute overtime scored 6 quick points to make the final score 25-19 with the Astro's on top. Points on the scoreboard were added by: Tammy Ballard, Shannon Lanier. The Astro's are tied for first place with Boyett in the league.

Miss Louise Vestal
NUPTIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Vestal of Whitewright announce the approaching marriage of Helen Louise Vestal to Jean Carroll Toney of Leonard on Saturday night, February 11, 1961 at seven o'clock in the First Methodist Church of Leonard.
Miss Vestal will be remembered as the only child born to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Lewis Vestal of Whitewright. Mr. Vestal was killed on Iwo Jima and Helen Louise was adopted and reared by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Rolla C. Vestal.
Helen Louise attended Baylor University at Waco from June 1960 to January 1961.
The prospective groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Toney of Leonard and is a member of the Senior Class of Leonard High School.
After a short wedding trip the couple will make their home in Leonard.
No formal invitations will be mailed. Friends of the couple are invited to attend the wedding and reception in the Church Educational Building immediately following the ceremony.
E. L. Cardwells Will Observe Anniversary With Open House
Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Cardwell, Celeste, will be honored with an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 12, in their home in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Hosting the occasion will be their daughter, Mrs. George Hackney, Jr., Route 2, Greenville and their sons, W. W. Cardwell of Bandera and E. L. Cardwell, Jr., of Weslaco. They have been residents of Celeste for 40 years. They have 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
No formal invitations will be issued. All friends and relatives of the family are invited.
