• A 23-year-old Commerce woman was jailed by Leonard police on Jan. 25, charged with driving while intoxicated. An officer observed the vehicle swerving and initiated a traffic stop. When the driver became combative with the officer, he asked the passenger if they had been drinking, and they stated that they had both had a glass of wine. After further observance of the driver’s eye movements, however, the officer wrote citations for failure to maintain a single lane and failure to display a driver’s license, and released the women. As the car was leaving the scene, the officer and an assisting officer both observed the woman swerve more and drive erratically, and performed a second traffic stop. At this time, the woman refused to exit her vehicle and had to be physically removed by the officer. Once out of the car, the officer noticed an odor of alcohol on the woman and that she could not speak words clearly, and maintained her combativeness. She further refused to perform the field sobriety tests, as requested, and refused to provide a breath or blood specimen. The woman was taken into custody for DWI and transported to a Bonham hospital where a judge signed a warrant to have blood drawn. The woman continued to verbally assault the officer during the entire process and make threats against him.
• A Leonard woman contacted police on Jan. 25 after a dog was following her and she was afraid it was going to bite her. The officer located the animal - a black pitt bull, and then contacted its owner and advised that any future violations of the city ordinance pertaining to dogs at large would result in a citation.
• Police were dispatched to a civil matter call on Jan. 25. Reports show that a resident and his wife had allowed a teenaged girl to live with them, but they were now having issues with the arrangement and wished for her to leave. The officer advised that an eviction notice would have to be provided to the girl. During a follow-up visit, the officer learned that the girl had found other living arrangements.
• A Leonard officer was dispatched to assist Fannin County Sheriff’s Office after a disturbance had broken out on County Road 5060 and the complainant was afraid it would get physical. The Leonard officer - and a Trenton officer - responded to the location and were able to get things calmed down without any physical violence taking place.
• Police were flagged down on Mulberry Street after a disturbance had broken out at the elementary school playground on Jan. 27. The officer discovered one of the parties involved was a family member, and contacted the school officer to take care of the situation.
• An officer responded to a report of a minor accident on Jan. 28 in the Sonic parking lot. An 18-year-old driver told officers that he was backing up to leave the business and failed to see a vehicle coming his way, and the two vehicles collided. No injuries were reported.
• A resident contacted police on Jan. 29 at 10:59 p.m. after observing the same vehicle drive through a particular area several times in approximately 30 minutes. The officer located the vehicle and observed paper come out of the passenger side window. The officer stopped the car and wrote a citation to the passenger for littering.
• A man who had reportedly been charged and convicted with intoxication manslaughter was arrested by a Leonard officer on charges of driving while intoxicated on Jan. 29. Reports show an officer detected the vehicle to be traveling at 81 miles per hour in a 65 zone. After stopping the vehicle and making contact with the occupants, the officer detected the odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle and observed several containers of alcohol in the car as well. A warrant was confirmed for a female passenger and she was taken into custody. The officer received permission to conduct a breath test on the driver - a 28-year-old Greenville man, but after retrieving the device, the man changed his mind. The officer then received permission to conduct field sobriety tests on the driver, and the driver showed 15 of the 18 signs looked for during the tests to indicate intoxication. He was taken into custody, at which point he became belligerent and irate. Another passenger advised the officer about his criminal history, and that he was currently on parole and wasn’t supposed to be driving. While the man sat in the patrol vehicle, the driver began pounding his head against the window and - before the officer could reach the vehicle - shattered the glass. Another patrol vehicle was brought to the location and the man was placed into it for transport. While in route to Bonham, the man again began hitting his head against the window. The officer stopped the patrol vehicle and sprayed the man with pepper spray to subdue him. The man was taken to the hospital where a warrant was obtained for a blood specimen. The man was then taken and booked in at Fannin County Jail. The man made several threats to kill the officer after he got out of prison for violating his probation.
• A resident on Travis Street called police on Feb. 1 after finding a money order missing that he had purchased to pay his rent. The man told officers that he had left the money order - made out for $400 but left blank on the “pay to the order of” line - on his coffee table and when he went to get it to give to his landlord, it was gone. The complainant contacted the bank and was able to get the name of the person who cashed the money order.
• Officers were dispatched to a handful of accidents due to the icy conditions experienced last week - most of which were minor - but one of which involved the transport of two to local hospitals. Reports show that a 2001 Dodge Neon driven by a 30-year-old Denison resident slid into a 1999 Ford Mustang driven by a 71-year-old resident while rounding a curve on State Highway 78 on Feb. 2. A passenger in the Neon and the driver of the Mustang were transported for possible injuries.
• An officer was flagged down and alerted of an accident at the corner of Oak and Cottonwood on Feb. 2 at 8:15 p.m. Reports show that the officer passed a man walking on Cottonwood while in route to the accident and he advised he was the driver of the vehicle. The man exhibited several signs of intoxication and - after performing field sobriety tests - was taken into custody for DWI. Upon inventory of the man’s Dodge Intrepid, the officer found a 30-pack of beer that was half empty. He originally found the doors locked with the keys in the ignition, and also found the car in drive, though the engine was shut off. After a trip to the hospital where a judge signed a warrant for the driver’s blood specimen, he was booked in Fannin County Jail for DWI.
• An officer was dispatched to a residence on Connett Street on Feb. 5 after a disturbance was reported. The officer made contact with the owner of the property who advised a verbal dispute broke out between one man and several others - all of which had been drinking - over a domino game. The upset man had left the scene, but told officers the altercation was only verbal.
• A resident on Cedar Street called police on Feb. 5 at 10:25 p.m. after she observed two men in a small red truck take a street sign. The officer looked for a vehicle matching that description, but was unable to locate one.
