Feb. 3, 2011 - January was School Board Recognition Month to help highlight the contributions of dedicated men and women who take the time to care about our local schools. It is a good time to focus on the crucial role our elected board of trustees play in our community and school. The Leonard Independent School District is joining districts across the state to thank board members for voluntarily tackling the enormous job of governing local school districts.

"Our board members serve as advocates for our children. School board members face difficult challenges in meeting the needs of our school district. They are representatives elected by the residents of the District to set policy, provide resources for up to date curriculum, and to serve as the citizen's voice in the education of our children. They devote countless hours to help ensure a quality education that will lead our students to success," said Larry LaFavers, Leonard ISD superintendent.

"Our school board members are a vital link between the community and the classroom. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of $8 million, 892 students, 131 employees, and four campuses. Their job is not an easy one, but they have a commitment to serve their community and ensure that all students are given every opportunity to excel through education. Help us show appreciation to these board members for giving of themselves and caring so much about every child enrolled in our schools," Larry LaFavers said.

See the back page of this issue for an  ad honoring the Leonard ISD school board. They are an educated group - as noted beside their names.
